What North Germans like to eat: Berliner

A must-have on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s day are Berliner. This morning there were no other cakes or pastries available in our bakery, but all variations of Berliner: filled with different jams, vanilla or nougat cream, with champagne-strawberry or egg-nogg filling, with whisky and cream or with apple and cider; you certainly get a choice at this time of the year.

When I was a kid we had them at midnight, and one of them would be filled with mustard. The one that got it would be lucky in the year to come.

And for dinner? Traditionally we had carp with horseradish sauce made with fresh cream. Well, for me that fish has too many sharp bones, so we will have a  nice fresh salmon instead.

Wish you all a happy New Year!
